9 minutes, United Kingdom, 2016

A young man confesses to his girlfriend that he has been sexually abused by a girl.

Broken is not so much about sexual abuse itself and therefore we are not showing it in the film. Instead we wanted to focus on the relationship between two lovers after one of them reveals he has been ‘raped’, and how this changes the dynamics in an intimate relationship – both physically and mentally.

Unfortunately, there exist a lot of myths about male rape. Male victims are told they were “lucky” or are believed to always want sex anyway. These misconceptions make the reality even more difficult for male rape victims. Since gender socialisation forces men into specific gender roles, men who have been raped are often not believed or taken seriously. This makes it difficult for men to talk about their experience.

Director Sam Van Zoest: “This is not something that has happened to me, but since cinema is such a powerful tool that has the potential to reach thousands of people, I feel an obligation to tell people about the problem of male rape. I want to make this movie because I want to tackle these misconceptions, and raise awareness about male rape. My aim is not to hurt or shock, or necessarily entertain, but to inform people and to make them think about their attitudes.”
